JAKOŚĆ / ART&DESIGN 2023

As part of the ART&DESIGN 2023 Festival NIE_MATERIA, the Academic Design Center is hosting an exhibition from the cyclical International Jewellery Competition of the leading event of the Legnica SILVER Festival, organized by the Art Gallery in Legnica since 1979.

The competition is dedicated to designers and creators of artistic jewellery. It promotes creative explorations within jewellery and, at the same time, creative expressions on the problems of contemporary world. The theme of the current edition of the Competition is QUALITY.

What is quality nowadays? Is the growing awareness of consumers based - as it used to be - on an assessment of craftsmanship and the market value of bullion? Or is it drifting towards a concern for the welfare of the planet, a broader reflection on the maker's intentions and the relationship with the client? The material of goldsmithing is increasingly becoming the idea itself, which takes the shape of objects with a variety of styles that enter into a dialogue with the viewer. If the artist's message becomes more important than the formal aspects of  jewellery, what is the ideological background? Are there, therefore, specific material manifestations and aesthetic determinants that define the quality of an artistic statement?

In the awarded works, the jury consisting of Slawomir Fijalkowski, Piotr Korduba, Ana Pina, David Sandu, Ludmila Šikolová founded the dynamics of contemporary goldsmithing. It manifested itself technically, technologically, formally as well as conceptually. The works responded to the competition theme "Quality" in a variety of - sometimes unpredictable - ways, revealing themselves once in the material layer, another time in the workmanship, in the message, and sometimes in all of these at once. The works submitted from 30 countries present a very high level and are attractive not only from the point of view of goldsmithing tradition, but also as an effort to transcend it.

Awarded the Grand Prix by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Youjin Um's (South Korea) brooches are simply astounding in their perfection of execution, redefining the sophisticated filigree technique, which allowed the artist to design brooches that are very contemporary in expression and almost architectural.

The second prize of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage was won by Iris Hummer (Austria) for her ring and at the same time megaphone, funnel, telescope. Conceived as an instrument for audio and visual communication, it reminds us of the relationship between jewellery and the senses. The object contains a subversive interpretation of the idea of functionality.

The third prize of the President of the City of Legnica went to a constructivist necklace by Susanne Hammer (Austria / Germany), made of steel and silver tubes threaded onto a rubber cord. The elements of the necklace stand apart from each other and move, registering the wearer's movement. Executive minimalism has brought spectacular visual and functional effect in this case.

Christina Karababa's (Greece) extensive, multi-part and conceptual project 7 Jewelry Quotes won the Gallery of Art Award. The artist used a software tool to materialize the language of expression of jewellery designers, finding a creative way to use 3D printing.

The Silver Spur for creative courage, innovation and uncompromising attitude was awarded to Tadeusz Jaskowiak for his work Blood Diamonds. The jewellery mini-installation in the form of a pouch concealing metal cartridges with "diamond" finials remains open to interpretations ranging from unambiguously pacifist to controversial comments on current world events. At the same time, it relates to the theme of the competition.
