Imprinted Time
'Imprinted Time' is an exhibition presenting books from the Woodcut Techniques and Art Book Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz. These are works created in the didactic process of the Woodcut Techniques and Artistic Book Studio led by Prof. Dariusz Kaca and by Dr. Wawrzyniec Strzemieczny, realized by students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, as well as Erasmus+ scholarship holders hosted at the studio. At the exhibition you will see 42 books, mainly reproduced in relief printing technique with leporello construction, but also codex solutions or unique, author's works. The themes of the books are diverse, as they result from the individual interests and sensibilities of their authors.
Anarchy we love
"The author's book is an attractive and ambiguous phenomenon, which, through the multiplicity of definitions, poses a constant challenge to its creators and recipients, often building a lifelong bond between them.
The starting point of this search, however, all the time remains the inspiration of the form itself and function of the book. The scale and variety of methods of postmodern thinking characterizing contemporary visual art means that the theoretical understanding of this particular artistic medium remains a challenge. American poet and artist G. Young compared the art book to the anarchy we love.
An emotional attitude towards the traditional book is declared not only by artists, but also by craftsmen and representatives of many professional groups who participate in various stages of the book-making process, not excluding production.
An art book was defined in slightly more detail by English art historian S. Bury, writing about an author's book that it is "a work of art in itself." We use this definition as a basic one, because author's books have long since gone beyond the confines of traditional volumes and are increasingly gaining the status of independent artworks inspired by books.
In the process of transformation of contemporary art, various forms of today's author's book were born. It is no longer what is traditionally perceived as a book, but rather a unique work of art through which the artist, as a sensitive medium, perceives and reacts to the surrounding world."
